That One Matt Bors Comic
How “we should improve society somewhat” conquered the discourse
From $10.00
That One Matt Bors Comic is an entire book about a single panel of a single comic that became a pervasive meme. Edited by Glenn Fleishman, with a foreword by Ryan North.
In September 2016, Matt Bors drew a four-panel cartoon that he had no idea would quickly become “that one Matt Bors comic.” You’ve probably seen it only as its final panel. A smirking guy, Mr. Gotcha, is improbably perched in a well, while a peasant of centuries-old appearance carrying a bundle of sticks says, “We should improve society somewhat.” Mr. Gotcha replies, “Yet you participate in society. Curious. I am very intelligent.”
The book includes an introduction by and interview with Matt Bors; new essays and fresh cartoons from writers and artists who think about memes, society, and politics; and curated galleries chosen from the panel’s thousands of remixes. It also looks into how memes don’t pay cartoonists’ bills, and the ur-internet meme, “On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.”
